Definition of Worship

Webster defines the verb worship as when a person has the feeling of adoring reverence for, or regard for1 something or someone. In his definition of worship as a noun, he makes it clear that there is an expression of emotion involved.  Thus, worship is defined as an active demonstration of a heart connection with God, whereby one expresses deep adoration and reverence.  Much more than mental assent, worship yields an exclusively focused, vertical communication flow between God and the worshiper.

God Himself clarifies this definition in several passages from the Bible.  Two such passages are found in the Gospel of John and in the Gospel of Matthew.  “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24, NKJV™).  “For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.”(Matthew 12:24, NKJV™)  In reviewing these passages, one gleans the concept that God requires focused, undivided loyalty in one’s heart-felt expression of love and adoration for Him. Undivided loyalty and passion is brought about by fellowship with God through prayer, study of His Word, and obedience to His commands.

So what is in your heart today?  Have you spent time making deposits there from God’s Word?  All too often, we spend more time preparing our bodies for worship services, while at the same time, neglecting our heart or spirit.  In the space of an hour or more, we have bathed, shaved, curled hair, and painted nails yet what have we done to prepare our inner man for worship?  Sadly, after that, come obstructions from the enemy that leave our hearts even less prepared.  Yet, we press on and attempt to enter into worship.  With little wonder, much more effort is required to overcome our heavy hearts to enable that heart-connection with God.  Here, persistence is the key to being able to express deep adoration and reverence to God which we long so much to do.

Worship can also be described as speaking words of faith in agreement with God’s Word.  A beautiful example of this is demonstrated by Jairus as he petitions Jesus to heal his daughter. He chose to ignore the circumstances of her apparent death, but instead worshiped Jesus by speaking words of faith in his petition.  Jesus responded by taking the girl’s hand, and she arose.

It is the author’s belief that worship will play a vital, life-changing role in people in these last days.  If what we call modern “worship” services, complete with multimedia presentations, dynamic preaching, and other forms of entertainment would have done it, Jesus would have already returned for His spotless bride.  Instead, God Himself is waiting for the true worshipers to return to a place, where they worship Him in Spirit and in Truth, in complete freedom from time and social customs, thereby ushering Him back into their midst.  With God Himself manifesting His full glory, our hearts and lives cannot help but be changed, being made ready for his ultimate return.

With so much teaching, preaching, and literature available about worship, why was this book written?  God directed the author to identify and explain the importance of worship, and why we must do it. Additionally, we will learn the benefits derived from true worship and the role it will have in ushering-in the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
